Lazy
Bob Nolan
Original copyright: September 27, 1955
The sun came up this morning
And I lay down in the shade
But somehow the shade moved over.
I should have nailed it down, I’m ‘fraid.
Refrain:
Lazy and hazy, the summer days
Make me so lazy, too.
Stretchin’ and catchin’ my share of sleep,
Dreamin’ my work’s all through.
Bluebirds are busy nestin’ near
While I’m so busy restin’ here.
Fishin’ and wishin’ the hours away,
All through the lazy day
In an alternate version: Hugh Farr sang the lead vocal part with Bob interjecting comments:
(Lloyd: “He’s a good-for-nothin’ lazy rascal. Foghorn! Foghorn!)
(Hugh Farr sings the verses:)
Yeah, I’m lazy and hazy,
The summer days make me so lazy, too.
(Bob: “Roll him over easy, boys.”)
(Hugh)
Stretchin’ and catchin’ my share of sleep,
Dreamin’ my work’s all through.
(Bob: “He’s un-industrious.”)
(Hugh)
Bluebirds are busy nestin’ near
While I’m so busy restin’ here.
(Bob: “Boy, you need a vitamin!”)
(Hugh)
Fishin’ and wishin; the hours away,
All through the lazy day.
ABOUT THIS SONG
Using a sleepy tempo and the simplest words, Nolan recreates a hot and drowsy summer afternoon. The song was never commercially recorded but it was popular in their radio shows and was included in both the 1940 Orthacoustic Symphonies of the Sage and Teleways Radio Productions transcriptions. "Foghorn" was the Sons of the Pioneers' good-natured nickname for Hugh Farr with his deep voice.
