Wendin' My Way to Wyoming

Bob Nolan
Original copyright: Undetermined

Cowboy riding against a setting sun.

When the weary day has reached its ending
And the sun is sinkin’ in the west,
Thru the dusk in dreams my way I’m wingin’
Like a homin’ bird back to its nest.

Refrain:
Wendin’ my way to Wyoming, back to that little old nest.
Out toward the sunset I’m homin’, weary and longin’ for rest.
Soon the night will sweep the sky like a bird of prey
And it hovers over me on my weary way.
Wendin’ my way to Wyoming, back to that little old nest.

Tho’ I’m far from home when night comes creepin’
And the world of wilderness falls slow.
In my dreams the fairy stars are creepin’
And on wings of memory I go.

ABOUT THIS SONG

The original title on the typed song sheet was “Wingin’ My Way to Wyoming”. Bob crossed out “Wingin’” and penciled in “Wendin’” in the title and in the 1st and 7th lines of the chorus. Key of B♭ is designated. Lem Giles’ name is typed on the upper right-hand corner and Bob has added "Bob Nolan &" above it in pencil.

Lem Giles (Aleth Hansen) of the Beverly Hill Billies and Bob Nolan were good-natured rivals on the radio in the early 1930s. They used each other's material. In fact, Bob joked to Ken Griffis in an interview that he had taken one of Lem's songs, changed it somewhat, and registered it for copyright in his own name. To complicate matters further, on the introduction to the Teleways Radio Productions transcriptions No. 62, Bob himself introduces "Wendin' My Way to Wyoming" as Tim Spencer’s.

We have included this piece as Bob's because of his name on the card in his own handwriting and because BMI considers it his.
